ARC Review: Legendary by Stephanie Garber

by Stephanie Garber
Rating: ★★★★★

A heart to protect. A debt to repay. A game to win. After being swept up in the magical world of Caraval, Donatella Dragna has finally escaped her father and saved her sister Scarlett from a disastrous arranged marriage. The girls should be celebrating, but Tella isn’t yet free. She made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name. The only chance of uncovering Legend’s identity is to win Caraval, so Tella throws herself into the legendary competition once more—and into the path of the murderous heir to the throne, a doomed love story, and a web of secrets…including her sister’s.

Legendary brings the readers back to the dangerous and dramatic world of Caraval with Tella and Scarlett following the competition to a new city with their love interests. Scarlett, still reeling from the horrors and false events of the last game, isn’t interested in ever competing again but she is very interested in learning what secrets Julian is hiding in his past. However, Tella has no choice but to compete after the deal she made in the last book. To find out the truth about her mother she must attend Caraval and expose the identity of the mysterious and powerful Caraval Master, Legend.

I can honestly say that I loved Legendary even more than I loved Caraval, a sentence I didn’t think I would ever write because I adored Caraval! The marvellous sequel is just too brilliant and it really shines with a mysterious plot and talented storytelling. I was reading this book in awe because from start to finish the book swept me up and made my heart grow three sizes. I  loved the way the story was action and intrigue right from the start and the book was actually a really complete storyline instead of a sequel being a gateway into a storyline that doesn’t achieve anything until the third book.

The mixture of the game in a luxurious setting teamed with a dangerous prince and the all-powerful Fates combined to make a book that was compelling and addictive. There wasn’t a dull moment and I was glued to the book until I finished it because I needed to know how it ended. Although, when it did end I was crazy sad because the book ended in such a good spot and I just wanted to know more! It will definitely be a long wait for me until the third book, Finale. What I hope comes from the third book is some more answers about Tella and more from Scarlett since we really didn’t see her much in this book. Tella is definitely on a more interesting path though so I’m really looking forward to reading more from her perspective. I have a feeling we’ll get mixed chapters from a few characters in Finale so hopefully it will all weave together very nicely and surprise!

(Thanks to Hachette Australia and Date A Book for sending me a copy of this book for an honest review. Legendary is available in Australia on the 29th of May!)
