“Charlie didn’t think Nick could ever like him back, but now they’re officially boyfriends. Charlie’s beginning to feel ready to say those three little words: I love you. Nick’s been feeling the same, but he’s got a lot on his mind – not least coming out to his dad, and the fact that Charlie might have an eating disorder. As summer turns to autumn and a new school year begins, Charlie and Nick are about to learn a lot about what love means.”
Alice Oseman’s online comic series returns with the complete fourth volume following the heart-stopping Charlie and Nick in love, dealing with mental health and growing up together. This volume did have the biggest focus on Charlie’s mental health, his eating disorder, self-harm and eventual knowledge of his OCD so these things may be confronting for some readers. However, I thought the author wrote it on a good surface-level and didn’t delve too deep in the hopes of not making it too confronting for readers.
I love the illustrations as always, the art style feels sweet and joyful in a way that reminds me of young love. The characters are all growing up too and you can see their style changes from the first volume to now. My only dislike is that these volumes are over so quickly because I devour the whole thing in one sitting then I don’t have anymore Nick and Charlie.
Now that Nick, Charlie and their friends are in a good spot I’d like to see more progression in their lives. Where will Nick go? How will it affect Charlie?! Will there be any surprises within their friend group or anything that will bring them closer together? Also, will Charlie be okay now he is getting help with his eating disorder? I have a lot of questions and Alice Oseman, I need answers!
